John M. Pawelek, PhD is a long-time faculty member in the Department of Dermatology, Yale School of Medicine, and a member of the Yale Cancer Center. He studies the cause of metasasis--the spread of cancer cells. For the past 15 years he has championed a century-old theory that metastasis occurs when white blood cells fuse with cancer cells. The resultant cancer cell-white blood cell hybrids acquire the white blood cell ability to move about the body thus causing metastasis. Dr. Pawelek focusses on the type of skin cancer known as melanoma, which is a cancer of pigment cells.
